Harvey T. Strosberg, Q.C. and Irwin Law Inc. are pleased to announce that the winner of the 2013 Harvey T. Strosberg Essay Prize for the best student essay on Class Actions in Canada is Jacob Damstra.
Mr. Damstra is an honours JD/MA (History) student in the second year of a joint degree program at the University of Western Ontario. His proposed thesis work will examine the comparative history of the doctrine of assumption of jurisdiction by Canadian courts in criminal and civil cases. This past summer he worked as a research assistant in the Faculty of Law developing a course on legal history, while also acting as the Adjutant and Operations Officer of his Canadian Forces Primary Reserves Regiment, the 1st Hussars. During the coming summer, Mr. Damstra will be working as a 2L summer student at Lenczner Slaght LLP in Toronto.
His prize-winning paper, “Foreign Classes Bringing Canadian Actions: Lessons from the Case against Anvil Mining Limited,” will appear in Volume 9, Issue 2 of the Canadian Class Action Review. He will also receive a prize of $10,000.
