Expression of consent to or acceptance of a claim made by another state; frequently invoked in territorial disputes as a basis for precluding subsequent objections to a claim of sovereignty which has been recognized. Also, an act by which a state acknowledges the emergence of a new state or, less frequently, the legitimacy of a new government within an existing state.
