Responsible government

The means by which the executive is held accountable to the legislature and usually associated with the notion that those who run the executive must sit also in Parliament.

The constitutional conventions which require that the prime minister and Cabinet may hold office only for so long as they can control a majority in the House of Commons or legislature, and which dictates that the formal head of state (governor general, lieutenant governor) must always act under the direction of the Cabinet.
