A name used by a business, whether it is the name of a corporation, trust, partnership, sole proprietorship, or an individual. It includes any name used by a corporation other than its corporate name.

The name under which a corporation, firm, or individual does business. It can qualify as a service mark and be registrable under the Trade-marks Act.

Until 1985 “trade-name” was spelled “trade name” in the Act, as it was commonly elsewhere. The 1985 consolidation of federal statutes made the change, for no known reason except to parallel the change of spelling that year to “trade-mark.
