In patent law, the requirement that an invention must have a practical use, must relate to the “useful” (not fine or professional) arts, and do what the patent specification claims it can. In copyright law, the design of “useful” articles receives only limited protection; further protection for their appearance may be gained by registration under the Industrial Design Act.
