Youth justice court
The court designated by the provincial or territorial government as having jurisdiction over cases prosecuted pursuant to the YCJA. In most jurisdictions the youth justice court is at the provincial or territorial court level. If a youth is charged with murder or is facing an adult sentence, the “youth justice court” may be presided over by a Superior Court judge, sitting with or without a jury. The YOA used the term “youth court,” and the term has remained in colloquial use.
